The Kids Are (Not) Alright, Fic Companion to Art Piece #2047

thekidsbanner

Art Title: The Last We Heard
Prompt Number: 2047
Artist: [livejournal.com profile] sailorhathor

Fic Title: The Kids Are (Not) Alright
Author: [livejournal.com profile] darcydelaney
Fandom/Genre: SPN RPF, Horror
Pairing(s): JJ/Thomas, hints of West/Shep
Rating: PG-13/light R
Word Count: ~11,000
Warnings: Language, show-level violence
Summary: The Padalecki, Ackles, and Collins kids were brought up with Supernatural--fake ghost hunts, acting like hunters, the whole deal. They all eventually grew out of their supernatural infatuation, though, except for Thomas. When the eldest Padalecki stumbles upon what he's convinced is a bona-fide case straight from the show, everyone shrugs it off until Thomas himself goes missing while checking it out, leaving behind a trail of research. All signs point to it being some kind of supernatural being, and now it's up to JJ, West, Maison, and Shep to channel their inner Winchester to find him.

At the risk of being yelled at, I don't think we should be writing fic about their children. They aren't adults or actors, they haven't put themselves in the public eye and they don't seek attention. It's innappropriate to use them as characters.

I agree with you, I cringed when I read the pairing. So sorry darcydelaney, I'm afraid I'll give this one a miss, but if you write more acceptable pairings, then I will of course read it :)

We hear you, and are discussing this now! We'll post a statement today, pretty sure.

As with all things, everyone has their opinion and their own limits. The point you make about extreme rpf is a valid one, and yes, you could argue double standards. But I genuinely see a distinction between adults who have chosen to work in a field which they knew would bring them fame, along with all its pros and cons. And children who have done nothing to warrant attention other than happening to have famous parents. The only reason I commented originally was because this is the first time I've seen their children used in this manor (as pairings). And aged up or not, it just doesn't sit right with me.

I completely agree with you. Definitely made me uncomfortable when I read the summary. Writing about actors, who are grown adults, and more than capable of laughing at/reading/ignoring fanfic is one thing. Writing fic about people's children is an entirely different matter. Especially writing them as pairings! I know the lines in fanfic can get more than a little blurred, but for me personally, this is a line I don't think should be crossed.

Don't worry, I've also managed to screw up my post! Deleted a comment by mistake, I've posted it again, but now it's in the wrong place in the thread. Argghhh! Oh well, ain't the first time, definitely won't be the last.

I couldn't agree with you more. I have no time for anons. If you feel a certain way, at least have the balls to put your name to it! You and I have completely polar opinions on this topic, and yet, we've managed to have a mature, respectful exchange which is great.

I have to agree with Saraid and Jenny. I feel this whole prompt should not have been allowed by the comm mods. It's one thing to write about the adult actors in fic. Writing fic about their children is crossing the line.
