Rules and FAQ 2013

Overview | Schedule | For Artists | For Authors | For Betas | Claiming Process | Crossovers and Misc. | Contact

Challenge Overview:

This is a reverse of the usual Big Bang challenge. Each artist wishing to participate creates one piece of art that will be posted anonymously to be claimed by an author.

Authors are then expected to write a short fic (minimum of 3,000 words) based on the art they chose.

We expect authors and artists to leave their [livejournal.com profile] spn_reversebang stories and artwork accessible and unlocked for at least six months after posting. We also strongly encourage that if you plan to delete or lock your journal after posting, that you consider archiving your work at an additional site such as AO3 or imugr.

You must have a Livejournal account to participate in this challenge, and all participants should join the community to assure that they don't miss important deadlines or updates to the challenge. Some posts (like the art previews) will be members-locked.

Schedule:

Sunday, September 1: Sign-Ups Open
Sunday, October 13: Artist Sign-Ups Close

Monday, October 14: Early Bird Art Submissions Due
Monday, October 21: Art Submissions Due

Thursday, October 24: Art posts go up
Friday, October 25: Writer sign-ups close
Saturday, October 26: Claims Open

Monday, October 28: The Big Reveal
Monday, November 18: Posting Schedule Announced

Thursday, November 21-28: Author Check-in (MANDATORY)
Sunday, December 8: Writer Rough Drafts Due

Thursday, January 2nd: Posting Begins

Rules for Artists:

By the rules of this challenge, each submission should be one (1) piece of new art, and it should be completed. Completed meaning, that it is fit to be a stand-alone piece. (You may still add to-, and make changes to your work after claims, but an author should be able to use it as a prompt as-is).

Your art may NOT have been posted anywhere else previous to this challenge.

Minimum requirements: 400x600 px for 2-dimensional art, or 30 seconds for a vid. There is no maximum.

Artists may submit two pieces of art for this challenge only if they make the Early Bird deadline with one of them. After that date only one submission will be allowed per artist.
The Early Bird deadline this year will be Monday, October 14th. All art will be due Monday, October 21st.

This challenge is open to all pairings and genres, so long as it includes at least one character or actor from Supernatural. Artists may choose to specify what pairings (if any) they envision in the story, as well as submit a short text description of their piece (optional). A complete submissions guide will be provided in due time, so please be sure to join and watch the community for updates.

Artists are not allowed to also sign-up as writers, and vice versa. The only exception to this are pinch-hitters, for which everyone can sign up, provided that they are on schedule with their initial prompt(s)

Please sign up to participate as an artist here.

Rules for the Authors:

Authors must write a fic with a minimum of 3,000 words, based on the art they choose during the Art Claims. Claims will be first come, first serve. Your fic must be related to the art for which it is written, and it cannot have been already posted elsewhere.

Rough drafts will be due Sunday, December 8th. Not only are rough drafts expected to meet the minimum requirement, but in the case of longer stories, we expect them to be at least 80% complete at the time of submission.

There will be required check-ins and draft deadlines. Also, a certain level of communication with your artist is expected. If you do not meet your deadlines or fail to communicate with your artist, you may receive one or more warnings, after which a pinch-hitter will be assigned.

There will be a mandatory author check in towards the end of the challenge (running from November 21st to 28th). All authors are expected to check in with us at this time. This is to make sure everyone is on track and no one has disappeared from the challenge. If you fail to check in at this time or make arrangements with us we will contact you. If we do not hear back we will assign a pinch hitter to the prompt.

The fics must be beta read, and we have a post for Fic Beta volunteers available for authors to contact directly. There is also a non-affiliated LJ community at [livejournal.com profile] spn_betas where you can seek a beta reader.

Authors are not allowed to also sign-up as artists, and vice versa. The only exception to this are pinch-hitters, for which everyone can sign up, provided that they are on schedule with their initial prompt(s).

Please sign up to participate as an author here.

Betas:

Volunteers to be Fic and Art Betas may sign up here.

The Claims Process:

Art claims will officially begin on Saturday, October 26th, though the post will be up a couple of days beforehand so that writers may take a look at all the art before the actual claiming starts. The art posts will contain thumbnail previews of all the art (the thumbnails will link to the full size version of the art), accompanied by an optional text description of the subject. All art will be posted anonymously, and claims will be first come, first serve.

During the first round of claims every writer is allowed to make just one claim, and claiming of a prompt by multiple writers will NOT be allowed.

The specific time of claims will be announced at least a week in advance so everyone will be able to make plans to be there.

Claiming via proxy will be allowed again this year. The details on how to do that will be provided when the art preview post goes up.

The Art Post(s) will be members-locked, so please be sure to join and watch the community in order to participate.

What about crossovers?

We strongly discourage them, but they will be allowed so long as the focus of the prompt remains on the SPN characters or actors. Additionally, it will be the artist's responsibility to provide explanations of, or information about, characters from other fandoms included in the artwork to the author.

Can you clarify the date that claims open??

At the top of the FAQ under schedule you have Sat October 26th but then in the 'Claims process' part of the FAQ you have Sat October 19th.

I ask because I'll be at a con on the weekend of the 19th and will need to make sure I have net access to post my claim.

Thanks.

Hi - I clicked the link to sign up as an author, but it says the link is broken. Is author signup not open yet? :(

Author sign ups are open here (http://spn-reversebang.livejournal.com/140004.html).

Hi! Is it bad form to sign up as a writer even if I might not be able to make a claim? I wouldn't want to discourage others from signing up in case I don't actually claim anything...

[identity profile] maichan.livejournal.com 2013-09-02 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
We do allow proxies so if you will be unavailable on the claims date, you can have someone else do it on your behalf. If you are just unsure if you will be able to commit to the challenge, author sign ups will stay open until October 25th, so you still have a lot of time to decide.

So I want to sign up as an artist, if I don't want underage or something in the story, can I write them in my text description of my piece?

Hey mods! I know it's a bit early, but do you know the general time that claims will be open on the 26th? I'm not sure if timezones have shifted with the new mod crew. Thanks!

Hi, this is my first time reversebang so sorry if the question a bit silly, but who decide the posting schedule? The mod, artist or author? And I plan to make additional arts for my prompts, do I need to send them also to you? If yes, is there any deadline for the art?

Thanx :)

Hey mods! I'm going to try posting again and hopefully, third time's the charm. It looks fine on the preview except for the links. They look a little screwy but they work. Let me know if it comes through a mess again and I'll see if I can get my artist to do it instead. : )
